"I have used appropriated images in my work throughout my career and was excited to be introduced to the jacquard loom. Though the jacquard loom speaks to the zeros and ones that gave birth to computer technology, the process of weaving relies on the skill and consistency of the weaver. Regardless of technology, this process is still susceptible to the imperfections of handwork and glitches of aging mechanics. This made the process irresistible to me.
I'm interested in the subversive potential of working in decorative arts and am drawn to fabrics like organza, satin, and velvet, and embellishment techniques and materials. Textiles play such an important role in everyday life, and this utility can be overlooked or ignored. This push and pull between beauty and banality or kitsch and luxury provides fertile ground for art making.
Three oversized decorative cushions call back to holiday souvenirs from the mid- 20th century that served as mementos of tourist destinations and evidence wanderlust. The cushions are revamped versions featuring bespoke embroidery and jacquard weaving of an enhanced image from the 2019 Alberta wild fires. Mounted on black satin and framed with fringe, the weavings show a glitchy contemporary landscape that leaves an aftertaste like a hoppy craft beer."
