This piece is part of the exhibition Innovative Threads: Contemporary Weaving on at the Alberta Craft Gallery - Calgary from January 25 to April 12, 2025.
"This piece is based on passementerie weaving techniques, scaling up the patterns used to create elaborate trimmings and finishings to create a large statement piece. I love the rhythm of these patterns and how the interconnections create movement and relationship between the different fibers chosen.
I love using these patterns with neutral and calm palettes like this and allowing the yarn structures and fiber types to really sing. This piece features some truly special yarns, like a foil-wrapped recycled denim that I treasure my dwindling stash of, and a wrapped tsumugi silk.
Working on pieces like this one is a slow process—while the weave structure is simple, a plain tabby weave combined with supplementary wefts that create the interconnections—it requires a lot of planning and managing of all the moving paths/threads."
