The object Mia Riley submitted for this exhibition is a play on a piece she admires from the Harvard Art Museum’s collection, a small celadon glazed bottle in the shape of a mythical beast.
During a residency last year, Mia was exploring themes from her childhood alongside motifs from this period of ceramic art. The result was a small Furby vessel, a strange pet indeed, one that Mia thought was akin to the mysterious animal depicted in the ancient vessels. These odd pets took a viral hold of our generation, inspiring both fear and imagination, which seem like fitting creatures to immortalize.
