The Tahltan Bear Dog was integral to the Tahltan people of northwestern British Columbia. Despite their small size, they were adept at hunting large game, including bears, by distracting them until hunters could make the kill. Beyond hunting, these dogs were cherished companions, sharing family tents and providing warmth during harsh winters. Their loyalty and versatility made them indispensable in early Canadian life.
In this sculpture, the dog is depicted with a traditional travois—a frame structure used by Indigenous peoples to transport loads over land. Before the introduction of horses, dogs commonly pulled travois, aiding in the movement of goods and contributing significantly to their communities’ mobility and survival.
